01 / Mobile interface design

Making a payment feel understandable

Barclays context: I led design work on Launchpad and contributed design and prototyping to Barclays Mobile Banking and Pingit. The visuals below revisit Pingit only.

Pingit / retrospective reconstruction

  • Send money screen: who are you paying, with a mobile number entry field starting 07 and a keypad.
  • Digital Assistant feedback screen asking how likely you are to use this feature if it makes it to the Barclays Mobile Banking app, with a five-star rating.
  • Assistant screen comparing this month's spending with last month in a bar chart, showing an overspend of £198.71.
  1. 01 Clear brand identity

Created the brand guidelines and ensured they were followed by the developers.

  2. 02 Obtain user feedback

    Through user research and surveys.

  3. 03 Trialled new features

Pioneered new features for our customers in an intuitive way.

Responding to research and refining the design

Working alongside user researchers, I used findings from testing to inform design and prototype iterations. My contribution was to translate those findings into clearer screen layouts, interaction flows and visual hierarchy, working with colleagues to refine the experience.

This reconstruction illustrates the design rationale: a focused recipient-entry step, a review screen that brings key payment details together before commitment, and a clear confirmation showing what happened next. These choices aim to reduce uncertainty and make the payment journey easier to follow.

Not original Barclays screens or an exact historical reproduction. Product details shown are illustrative.

02 / Workflow & information design

Making complex work easier to follow

At HMRC, internal change requests moved through several teams to establish what work was needed, who would contribute and what the combined response should contain. Jira tracked the work, supported by requirements documents and responses from contributing teams. When we started, there was no shared standard operating procedure manual.

Starting point

What needed attention

  • No shared SOP manual

The process was not supported by a standard procedural guide.

  • More fields to complete

The Jira form contained fields that were later removed.

  • A route needing clarification

The focus of my work: defining personas and the main successful route.

My contribution

What changed, as part of the team

  • Documented
    Guidance colleagues could follow

Helped establish SOPs explaining triggers, required information, actions, responsibilities and outputs.

  • Simplified
    Less form-filling

Helped reduce the number of Jira fields. Exact fields and counts are not available.

  • Clarified
    A clearer route

Helped define the happy path and consider different users through persona work.

Reconstructed journey

The main successful route

  1. 1 · Phase 1
    Understand the request

Review the proposed change and identify the teams likely to be affected.

  2. 2 · Phase 1
    Prepare the work

Clarify requirements, identify responsibilities and create the necessary Jira subtasks.

  3. 3 · Phase 2
    Gather team responses

Track contributions and separate completed responses from those needing follow-up.

  4. 4 · Phase 3
    Bring the response together

Check scope, assumptions and dependencies for gaps or contradictions.

  5. 5 · Phase 3
    Review and hand over

Prepare a coherent response explaining what is included and what happens next.

How my contribution supports every stage

  • Documented. SOP prompts for each stage: What starts this step? What information is needed? Who acts next? What marks completion?
  • Clarified. The happy path above, with different users considered through persona work.
  • Simplified. Fewer Jira fields to complete while tracking the work.

Ideas I implemented

  • Conditional questions

Show extra fields only when relevant, subject to checking information requirements.

  • Clear correction route

Explain what is missing and how to resolve it before progressing.

  • Review before hand-over

A concise summary with a chance to correct information.

Retrospective, simplified reconstruction, not an original HMRC artefact.
